Is a metallic finish the right choice for your front door?

With so many finishes now available to choose from, it can be a daunting process deciding which to go for. The trend for copper, rose gold and gold finishes has definitely gained momentum over the last few years and it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere soon.

We asked our designer and co-founder, Elizabeth Assaf for her view on the trend.

‘Metallic finishes are versatile because you can create impact and be unique with earthy and natural elements which work well with so many different facades. For the foreseeable future they are definitely here to stay.’

Metallic front doors work well in many designs:

  1. Rendered homes with grey slate roofing and black, grey or rust windows.
  2. Homes with an element of copper, stone or steel cladding or trim.
  3. Homes where impact needs to be added.
  4. Homes with oversized doors which need a ‘wow’ factor.
  5. Homes with an architectural glazed wall.
  6. Timber-clad houses.

Things to consider if you're thinking about a metallic front door

  1. Cost: a metallic door is an investment piece.
  2. Appearance: as the door oxidises, the finish will change colour.
  3. Protection: your door needs to be protected from weathering by a porch or overhang.
  4. Maintenance: your door will need to be waxed at least once a year but if your door is scratched or damaged, you'll require a specialist to repair it.

How to choose the right finish for your front door

There are a variety of finishes to choose from – you could go textured and vintage with a finish that looks old from the minute it’s on or go for a more polished coppery feel. These steps will help you with your decision:

  1. Create a mood board that takes into account external and internal finishes to make sure you get it right. We offer a free moodboard service if you need help.
  2. Marry all the accessories around the door, including the handle, to ensure the entrance works as a whole.
  3. Think about the textures on your property and how they work together. For instance, a contemporary building may look better with something a little more industrial than sharp and polished.
  4. Ask for samples, samples and more samples! Make sure you have a big enough sample to be aware of the impact the door will have on your finished property.

How to maintain your bronze door

1. Your bronze door will be delivered waxed. It should then be waxed at least once a year or, if the door gets a lot of weathering, every 6 months. This is done with a rag and takes less than 10 minutes on each side.

2. Bronze doors will oxidise as they are a natural product – this can look as though there is a white or greenish residue on the door but waxing regularly will reduce it.

3. At any time, you can use an electric polisher on your door to bring the finish back to how it looked on day one.
