Do you live in a traditional or period-style home but yearn for a modern front door? If that sounds like you, there’s good news: you can have the door of your dreams. Read on to find out how to marry classic with contemporary.
Consider a vertical design because this style has a more traditional look. Your door will feel modern in function, but the design will keep it classic and grounded. Take a look at our Porto, Milano V, Raw in Bronze, Bari, Ridge, and Rondo V designs as these are all options that might work for you and your property.
Scroll through the gallery on the left for some inspiration including a dual door, which makes a bold statement both inside and out. And, don't forget, we're here for advice and can create a moodboard to help you understand how the various finishes will work together.
A front door flanked by two sidelights is a traditional layout for an entrance: it's beautifully symmetrical and creates a sense of balance, which works for a traditional-style home. Adding an oak porch is both a practical (protects people and the door from the weather) and aesthetic (looks great!) option, which adds to the traditional vibes. By contrast, a contemporary home owner may choose one sidelight and an oversized door.
Double doors are also traditional, although today clients are more likely to go for one large door, which could be an option if your property has a large opening. Scroll through the gallery on the left for ideas and also see our case studies including A traditional house with a dual design door.
Dark colours such as oak with ebony oil and natural hardwoods such as oak finished in oil give a more traditional feel to your door. There's no hard and fast rules though, so if you fancy a traditional style door in bronze or a RAL colour, the choice is yours.
If you're struggling to make your decision, ask us to make a moodboard for you, which is a great way of visualising the different options and finishes, and how they might work together. To see what other traditional home owners have chosen click here.
Handles are an important consideration for your door. Solid bronze pull handles or knobs are a great way to keep the design classic both in terms of look and material, and lever handles are also a traditional choice. As a material, bronze feels warm to the touch and is a wonderful addition to any door design.
Or go for something with a contemporary twist like the owner of Smurf House (the yellow door with a custom-made handle in the gallery on the left and case study here) and make your own style statement.
